Background of the study:
Modern wedding trends have increasingly influenced traditional marriage rites in Ikenne Local Government Area. While traditional marriage rites embody cultural heritage through rituals, attire, and communal participation, modern trends—characterized by lavish ceremonies, westernized practices, and media influence—are reshaping these practices (Oluwaseun, 2023). This transformation reflects broader societal changes as communities balance global influences with long-standing customs (Akinyele, 2024). Traditional rites, which once emphasized community involvement and ancestral approval, are now juxtaposed with contemporary expectations of grandeur and individuality. This study examines how modern wedding trends are impacting the authenticity and continuity of traditional marriage rites, exploring the tensions and synergies between modernity and tradition. It also investigates the socio-cultural implications of this shift on familial and community structures, thereby contributing to the discourse on cultural preservation in the face of globalization (Babatunde, 2025).

Statement of the problem:
Traditional marriage rites in Ikenne are being overshadowed by modern wedding trends that emphasize extravagance and individualism. This shift has resulted in the dilution of indigenous practices and a loss of cultural identity in matrimonial ceremonies. Limited research exists on the specific impacts of modern wedding trends on traditional rites. This study aims to fill that gap by exploring the underlying causes and consequences of this cultural transformation (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the impact of modern wedding trends on traditional marriage rites.
  2. To identify the cultural elements that are being altered or lost.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving traditional matrimonial practices.

Research questions:

  1. How have modern wedding trends affected traditional marriage rites in Ikenne?
  2. What cultural elements of traditional rites are most impacted?
  3. What measures can preserve traditional matrimonial practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Modern wedding trends significantly alter traditional marriage rites.
  2. The shift towards modernity leads to a loss of cultural authenticity in matrimonial ceremonies.
  3. Preservation strategies can mitigate the impact of modern trends on traditional practices.

Significance of the study:
This study provides crucial insights into the impact of modern wedding trends on traditional marriage rites, offering guidance for cultural preservation and policy formulation. Its findings will assist community leaders and cultural custodians in balancing tradition with contemporary practices (Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of modern wedding trends on traditional marriage rites in Ikenne Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on matrimonial practices. It does not extend to other cultural ceremonies.

Definitions of terms:

  • Modern Wedding Trends: Contemporary matrimonial practices influenced by global and western cultures.
  • Traditional Marriage Rites: Culturally specific rituals and ceremonies associated with marriage.
  • Cultural Authenticity: The degree to which cultural practices remain true to their indigenous origins.
